Pelotonia Exceeds $200 Million in Funds Raised

Greatest Team Ever reaches milestone to support cancer research at the James Cancer Hospital
 COLUMBUS, OH –August 27, 2019 – Pelotonia has announced total funds raised by the Pelotonia community since the organization began in 2008 has surpassed $200 million. Pelotonia directs 100 percent of every dollar raised by its participants to life-saving cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James).
“This community’s commitment to ending cancer is what has made this accomplishment possible,” said Doug Ulman, President and CEO of Pelotonia. “This milestone drives tangible results at the James with additional researchers, physicians and staff saving lives and giving us hope to help us meet our one goal.”
Pelotonia’s operational costs are paid for by major funding partners including American Electric Power Foundation, Huntington Bank, L Brands Foundation, Peggy and Richard Santulli, Harold C. Schott Foundation, Cardinal Health Foundation, and Diamond Hill Capital Management. This funding model enables Pelotonia to direct 100 percent of every dollar raised by its participants to cancer research at the OSUCCC – James.
Pelotonia dollars support five key areas at the OSUCCC – James including:
  • Idea Grants:
     
    134 Pelotonia Idea Grants, which provide funding support for two years, have been given to OSUCCC – James research teams with transformational ideas. Awardees are selected through a peer-review process conducted by both internal and external scientists not competing for grants in the current funding year. This represents the work of more than 175 investigators across 12 colleges plus Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
  • Fellowships:
     
    Funding has been awarded to 475 undergraduate, graduate, medical and postdoctoral student fellowships at The Ohio State University through an annual allocation of $2 million in Pelotonia revenue for this Pelotonia Fellowship Program.
  • Senior Scientists:
     
    Funds raised by Pelotonia have helped invest in the labs of some of the best talent in cancer research upon coming to The Ohio State University. A total of 87 researchers have been recipients of Pelotonia support to further their crucial work.
  • Statewide Initiatives:
     
    Pelotonia is funding three statewide clinical research studies focused on

    These studies are conducted in partnership with hospitals across the state of Ohio.
  • The Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology:
     
    The Pelotonia Institute at the OSUCCC – James, established in 2019, is a comprehensive bench-to-bedside research initiative focused on harnessing the body’s immune system to fight cancer at all levels—from prevention to treatment and survivorship.
