By The Pelotonia Team|December 10, 2020

COLUMBUS, OH (December 10, 2020) – Pelotonia today announced the continuation of its major funding partner relationship with the American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation, which has committed $2.5 million from 2021 through 2025. With the support of major funding partners such as the AEP Foundation, Pelotonia is able to donate 100 percent of every dollar raised by participants to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James), including the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology.
“The entire Pelotonia community is beyond humbled by AEP’s continued legendary support of our mission to accelerate cancer research,” said Doug Ulman, Pelotonia President and CEO. “This visionary support from AEP allows us to continue to invest 100 percent of every dollar raised by the growing community of Pelotonia participants and volunteers in innovative cancer research at the OSUCCC – James, which is more critical today than ever before.”
The AEP Foundation has been a Pelotonia funding partner since 2010 and has supported a peloton since the organization’s inception in 2009, raising more than $1.3 million to advance life-saving cancer research. Major funding partners supporting Pelotonia also include Huntington Bank, L Brands Foundation, Peggy and Richard Santulli, Harold C. Schott Foundation, Cardinal Health, Diamond Hill Capital Management and Nationwide.
“The American Electric Power Foundation’s support of Pelotonia reflects our mutual commitment to ending cancer, and we continue to be impressed by Pelotonia’s efforts to raise funds for impactful cancer research despite a tumultuous year,” said Dale Heydlauff, President of the American Electric Power Foundation. “We’re proud to unite with the Pelotonia community in 2021 and beyond to ensure the cancer research being conducted right here in Central Ohio, but benefiting people globally, has the support needed to reach our collective One Goal.”
Through the backing of major funding partners including AEP, Pelotonia is able to direct fundraising dollars to support cancer research in a number of ways:
  • Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology, which was established with a landmark financial pledge of $102 million in 2019 to OSUCCC – James, to accelerate advanced cellular therapies to harness the power of the immune system to fight cancer
  • Idea Grants provide the initial funding to teams of faculty researchers collecting data in order to apply for larger grants
  • Student Fellowships encourage promising students to pursue cancer research with faculty mentors
  • Junior and Senior Scientist Programs attract and retain talented researchers
  • Statewide Initiatives across a network of more than 50 Ohio hospitals support prevention, early detection and better outcomes of specific cancer types
“The continued commitment of Pelotonia’s strong community of supporters – including major funding partners like American Electric Power Foundation — is vital to maintain cancer research momentum here in Columbus, Ohio, an effort that results in impact worldwide,” said Raphael E. Pollock, MD, PhD, director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and surgical oncologist with the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. “We’re deeply grateful for the commitment and passion of the Pelotonia community and the funding partners. This makes it possible for Pelotonia to direct 100 percent of every dollar raised to support cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.”
Since its inception, Pelotonia has funded and awarded 175 idea grants and 567 student fellowships and supported three statewide initiatives.
