Pelotonia Announces AEP as Major Funding Partner

Long-time funding supporter to increase yearly commitment

COLUMBUS, OH (June 27, 2018) – Pelotonia, a grassroots organization that raises money to accelerate funding for innovative cancer research, is proud to announce an enhanced multi-year partnership with the American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation. Beginning this year, the AEP Foundation will increase their support of Pelotonia and become a Major Funding Partner through 2020.

“Pelotonia is incredibly grateful to have the support of the AEP Foundation– a visionary partner who has been with us from the beginning and whose continued generosity over the years has enabled us to fund our critical mission to end cancer,” said Doug Ulman, Pelotonia President and CEO. “Because of its contributions, we are able to magnify our impact by expanding our efforts to fund research, further mobilize communities and help transform lives across the world.”

AEP has been a Supporting Funding Partner of Pelotonia since 2010 and has also fielded a Peloton since the organization’s inception in 2009, raising more than $980,000 for life-saving cancer research to-date.

“The American Electric Power Foundation is proud to support Pelotonia because, like thousands of riders and tens of thousands of donors, we’re fully committed to ending cancer, “ said Dale Heydlauff, president of the American Electric Power Foundation. “Pelotonia’s inspiring mission to raise dollars to fund critically important, life-saving cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute is already saving lives and giving thousands more hope that one day we will realize the goal that unites us: to end cancer.”

A portion of the additional funds from the AEP Foundation will be utilized to inspire and encourage user fundraising in PULLL, Pelotonia’s new fundraising app, in the name of the American Electric Power Foundation. PULLL allows users to generate funds for transformational cancer research through exercise – cycling, running and walking. The app, available in the App Store and the Play Store, is free for anyone with a smartphone and easily syncs with popular fitness tracking apps Strava and MapMyFitness.

Thanks to Major Funding Partners like the AEP Foundation, Pelotonia is able to donate 100 percent of every dollar raised by riders, virtual riders and volunteers directly to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). These donations are used to support cancer research in several ways:

  • Idea Grants, which investigate new and innovative basic, clinical, translational and population-based science clinical trials;
  • Fellowships, which encourage undergraduate, graduate, medical and postdoctoral students to become independent cancer researchers
  • Tools for discovery to aid cutting-edge research;
  • Funding research of the best and brightest physician scientists who are coming to Columbus, Ohio, to further their passion for treating patients and pursuing scientific solutions.
  • Statewide initiatives, which take aim at specific cancer types by working with community hospitals throughout Ohio to promote prevention, early detection and better outcomes.

Since its inception, Pelotonia has funded and awarded 134 idea grants and 475 fellowships, as well as support for 87 senior scientists and three statewide initiatives. Pelotonia’s operational costs are paid for by funding partners including American Electric Power Foundation, Huntington Bank, L Brands Foundation, Peggy and Richard Santulli, Harold C. Schott Foundation, Lilly Oncology, Cardinal Health Foundation, Diamond Hill Capital Management and Nationwide.
