Pelotonia ‘15 Brings Seven Year Total to More Than $100 Million For Cancer Research

(COLUMBUS, OH, November 18, 2015) – Pelotonia, a grassroots movement that raises money to fund cancer research, has announced that riders, virtual riders and volunteers raised a record-breaking $23,659,675 during the 2015 event, bringing the organization’s seven year total raised since inception to $106,055,015.

To celebrate this achievement, special guest, Sheryl Crow performed at Pelotonia’s year-end celebration at The Schottenstein Center on November 18, 2015.

“As a cancer survivor, it’s incredibly meaningful for me to be a part of Pelotonia’s check celebration. This community has already achieved so much for cancer research but they continue to go above and beyond each and every year with one goal in mind,” says Sheryl Crow. “Their fundraising efforts have already made such an impact on cancer research and they show no signs of slowing down. I can’t wait to see what they continue to do.”

Pelotonia directs 100 percent of every dollar raised by participants to cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James).

Their commitment to ending cancer is what has made Pelotonia such a huge success,” says Michael A. Caligiuri, MD, Director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of The James. “Without it, many promising ideas for preventing and treating cancer would not move forward and we would stand to lose the next generation of talented scientists. Thank you for moving us closer to a cancer-free world.”

Operational support from Pelotonia’s funding partners, including major funding partners L Brands Foundation, Huntington Bank, and Peggy and Richard Santulli, make Pelotonia’s 100 percent mission possible. 100 percent of every dollar raised by riders, virtual riders and volunteers goes directly toward research at the OSUCCC – James to be directed to cancer research.

“We are so inspired by all that the Pelotonia community has achieved in such a short period of time and we are eternally grateful to our partners and our participants for their unwavering support of our collective mission to end cancer. The impact of the Pelotonia movement is transformational and together we can eradicate this disease,” says President and CEO Doug Ulman.

Pelotonia funds are allocated to four primary areas: a fellowship program encouraging promising students to pursue research with faculty mentors; “Idea Grants” providing seed money to teams of faculty researchers who are collecting data in order to apply for larger external grants; sophisticated equipment to aid in cutting edge research; and recruitment and retention of the brightest minds in cancer research. To date, 73 idea grants have been given to researchers with transformational ideas, 353 fellowships have been awarded to brilliant young scientists and 59 senior scientists have been funded to pursue cutting-edge research.

On August 8 and 9, 2015, 7,981 riders and more than 2,700 volunteers from 40 states and 10 countries participated in routes that ranged from 25 to 180 miles, starting in Columbus and finishing at one of four destinations.

The 2016 Pelotonia ride is scheduled for August 5‐7, 2016. Rider registration will open on January 20, 2016, at www.pelotonia.org.
