Pelotonia 12 To Kick Off At Columbus Commons

Pelotonia Announces New Opening Ceremony Venue and Saturday Start

On Friday, August 10, 2012, thousands of riders, guests and volunteers will gather on the lawn at Columbus Commons to kick off Pelotonia 12. In its fourth year, Pelotonia expects to exceed the 4,986 riders and the $13.1 million raised in 2011. Columbus Commons, the newly opened 9-acre green space in downtown Columbus, will allow for Pelotonia to accommodate even more riders to further the organization’s mission: end cancer. The move to Columbus Commons follows the event’s first three successful years starting from the lawn of Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS).

“CAS was the perfect partner for the early years of Pelotonia, generously lending its event expertise and other in-kind support to our staff. We will always be appreciative of their collaboration. We’re excited to bring Pelotonia to our city’s iconic new park and look forward to the growth Columbus Commons offers.”
—Tom Lennox, CEO of Pelotonia

“The relationship between CAS and the Pelotonia mission was natural from the outset. As the world’s leader in chemical information, we support fundamental molecular research, which is where cancer prevention and therapy are advancing. We were delighted to offer the CAS campus as the launch site since 2009, and look forward to watching Pelotonia continue its phenomenal trajectory by moving downtown in the city’s bicentennial year.”
—Robert J. Massie, President of Chemical Abstracts Service

“Columbus Commons was built to provide a gathering place for our community…to bring people together and create a green oasis in the heart of our downtown. What better way to showcase it than to host one of the community’s premier events – Pelotonia. We’re thrilled to partner with Pelotonia, which does such important work that benefits the world class Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Ohio State University.”
—Guy V. Worley, President/CEO of the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation and Capitol South

“In late 2008, when a small group of us brainstormed the notion of a cycling event that would fund cancer research at Ohio State, we turned to the people who had served as central Ohio hosts for decades – CAS. And just like they had done for the Columbus Symphony and so many other community groups, Bob Massie and the CAS family welcomed us with open arms. For the last three years, we’ve enjoyed an amazing partnership as the lawn of Chemical Abstracts was transformed into the official start-line for thousands and thousands of riders in Pelotonia. This year, as we move downtown to Columbus Commons and accommodate more cyclists than ever before, we owe a debt of thanks to CAS, not just for their hospitality, but for their commitment, leadership and partnership to create a cancer-free world.”
—Michael A. Caligiuri, MD, Director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO to The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute
